Guide to

CREATING YOUR OWN STYLE!

Our personal styles are as unique as each of us.

Just as our fingerprints are different from any other person’s set of prints,

our STYLE

should be unlike any other’s, too.

Fashion is.Style is

Lol. To start with, bohemians are free spirits. The very name specifies one who does not follow the rules!

So, to set forth “rules,” addressing a bohemian, is like clipping our wings! Rules are restrictive and don’t allow us to fly.

At the risk of going against your unconventional spirit, and mine, for the sake of praising the good and hoping to discourage the bad practices, I set before you my “suggestions” to help you find your own personal style. 🙂

utterly unfair

It’s only after living a good portion of our lives that we make that discovery. And, as we act on it, our true selves begin to emerge more and more. By the time we become comfortable with our own personal, individual style, we don’t have the bodies that properly and attractively showcase our style. Lol. Lol.

So, maybe we should all become fashion designers, creating our style for younger wearers. But, that would defeat the purpose!!

Lol. But, seriously…

right to flaunt

But, I do advise using wisdom and discernment.

I offer the following tips—

tips I wish my younger self could have known and embraced.

1 Color:

Establishing YOUR correct seasonal color-wheel colors to complement YOUR skin and hair is the MOST VALUABLE of all my guidelines.

For decades of my life, I wore the wrong colors that fought against my complexion and hair coloring. Finding your correct seasonal color scheme does wonders in enhancing your natural beauty!

It’s NOT “what are your favorite colors?”,

it’s what colors complement your innate appearance.

2 Horizontal vs. Vertical:

Horizontal stripes and patterns tend to shorten and widen the look of the body. The same is true in wearing a top of one color with a contrasting-colored bottom.

Vertical stripes and patterns elongate. So does wearing an outfit of all the same color.

rule of thirds

3 Rule of Thirds:

Breaking at the 1/3 or 2/3 division is much more attractive than breaking in the middle.

I believe this to be true. I know it’s true on me.

4 Full vs. Fitted:

If you’re wearing a flowy top, wear fitted pants or pencil skirt.

If you’re wearing harem pants, wear a fitted top, but it doesn’t have to be this abbreviated.

5 No skin-tight clothes—

and, no boobs hanging out!

I’ll allow a FEW tight exceptions, such as leggings (with something coming down over your derriere), and some stretchy tops. But, PLEASE!—bear in mind your figure!

NOBODY wants to see defined ripples and bulges! I think many women don’t even know what they look like!

Even on smaller figures—we really don’t need to see you naked in color!!

Wear a smooth and supportive bra: Floppy, sagging appendages are NOT attractive! Also, it’s not desirable to reveal 80-percent of your breasts to be sexy! The upper dimple of your cleavage is “ample.” Frankly, any more exposure often becomes repulsive!

6 The Secret to Mixing Prints:

When mixing prints, stripes, plaids, at least one color should match.

Important in matching: Take your proposed outfit to the window and see it under the true light of day. Artificial lighting changes the shade of color.

7 Re-purpose, re-fashion, up-cycle:

Never underestimate the power of thrifting and re-fashioning! This is my equation for creating original style.

This is one of my best re-fashioning/up-cycling outfits to date.

8 Frugality is the Key:

Don’t  overlook what you may have dismissed in your mind.

You may indeed think of thrift stores for finding unique and vintage pieces to enhance your wardrobe, but have you thought of buying “unwanted” items?

Look through the mark-down racks in thrift stores to find stuff discounted to as low as 25-cents!

Search through piles of “duds” to find your treasures in the thrift outlets.

The stores just want to get rid of stuff that’s been there too long. You can gladly take it off their hands and make cool stuff from cheap materials!

In your pursuit of your treasures, don’t ignore clothing items that aren’t your size.

Keep an eye out for anything colorful and different. If it’s too small, consider using a part of it as a frill to enhance a piece you’re creating, or thinking of making

—or, as patches when you’re making patchwork. Or, grab a large garment with an awesome print or big denim jeans.

Remember: Large garments yield more material!

Yes, searching through the “undesirable” leftovers is just where to discover the most excellent finds—for pennies!

And, PLEASE!—don’t disregard

“boulevard shopping!”

Don’t know what this is?

It’s simply “shopping the boulevard.”

It’s stopping to see what your neighbor has thrown out!!

Many, especially Americans, are very wasteful, I’m sorry to say. People put out on the curb USEFUL things! simply because THEY don’t want them anymore.

From the curb or the thrift store, use textiles from off-beat sources, such as,

dismantled throw pillows, couch cushions, curtains and drapes, tablecloths, pillowcases, and further unexpected fabric supplies.

Or, also from the curb, find cool lamps that work, and more. I even found a computer tower and took it to my friend who willingly rebuilt it for me! = free computer!!

9 Accessories, accessories, accessories:

No outfit is complete without ’em!

By adding a “layer” of embellishments, you can go from PLAIN to PEANUT in a matter of seconds!! Lol.

Groovy footwear, a fun hat, and lotza jewelry are icing on the cake!

Classic pumps are too square! I’ve always detested pumps with maxi skirts! Ugh!

The more unconventional options are boots and sandals.

The last bit of advice I can give you is: Before you walk out the door,

take a look at yourself in the mirror

a full-length mirror—front AND back.

Be honest. See yourself as others will see you.

I’m convinced that those women who are—okay, I’m gonna say it—repugnant to look at, don’t have any idea how painful it is for one’s eyes to briefly light upon them!!

Bring joy into your dressing…

be FUNKY,

be FABULOUS

be FRUGAL!!
