Dress vs. Outfit, pros and cons

Hey.

In this post, I set before you a “contest of contenders.”

Do you like the convenience of wearing dresses, or do you choose the versatility of putting together outfits?

In comparing the “dress” to the “outfit,” I am NOT pitting this particular dress against this specific outfit. These, pictured above, are soley representatives of the “opponents.”

Between the two—any dress and any outfit, I definitely have my preference; but, I thought it might be fun and enlightening to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of both.

The Dress…

I think a lot of women seem to usually opt for wearing a dress.

Pros:

  1. A dress is convenient to put on in a rushed situation.

2. It is created to have a unified, finished appearance.

3. A fashion professional  designed it.

4. It is a ready-made, complete look: nothing to fuss with.

5. It’s a quick, “just-grab-it-and-jump-into-it-and-go” solution to the day’s question of what to wear.

Cons:

  1. The biggest drawback to dresses, as far as I’m concerned, is: Once you’ve worn it, from then on, it’s reruns!

2. It’s ready-made and somebody else designed it.

3. It leaves no room for your own creativity, other than adding a jacket, vest or hat.

4. It’s not versatile, as in: It usually can’t be worn in any other way but the one way.

The Outfit…

Pros:

  1. An outfit is a custom-made, harmonious mix of elements, blended by the wearer, to specifically suit the mood of said wearer.

2. It offers endless possibilities: Because an outfit is a combination of parts, your closet bears many, many outfits, so you never have to go out looking the same—ever!

3. Creating one’s own look gives the wearer a sense of achievement. When compliments are given, the wearer and inventor of the outfit can take pride in what she created.

4. A smart outfit is the result of the wearer’s own ingenuity, and reflects the talent of that one.

Cons:

  1. Originating an outfit is a challenge, which could also be on the “pro” side, because creative challenges are fun to the creative!

2. It may take longer to design the day’s outfit, rather than jumping into a pre-made ensemble of a dress or suit.

3. An outfit may not be formal enough for certain occasions, although, with the appropriate components, I think one could create an original formal ensemble.

4. I’m having a difficult time finding another “con.” Perhaps, creating an outfit gives one too many options?

When I was just a little kid, my mom and we girls had basically two or three choices: a dress, a skirt or pants with a blouse, and, for us kids, shorts and a T-shirt for play.

Thrift stores as we know them today, did not exist.

Now, I’m ashamed to say, America has become such a throw-away society, that we have produced a glut of good, usable clothing. So, now, we have multiple thrift shops in nearly every city and town in the U.S.

However, this is excellent for the thrifty shopper looking for those COOL rags which can become building blocks for that amazing unconventional look, and those promising threads that can be refashioned into something unique.

I end this post with a quote from my friend Sandra, regarding her evolution in style, which is also my own sentiment: “I’m so much cooler than I used to be!” Lol.

I absolutely love to create outfits!

  1. Hi! Hmmm… I like the ease of dresses, but I prefer to put together outfits. Especially since it means I can probably put the pieces together with different things, rather than wearing all one piece. idk, that’s how I feel about it :).

    1. Hey Ada. Thanks for your comment!

Yep! Me, too. I much prefer the creative route.

However, it’s also fun (and creative, too) to occasionally construct a dress from two or three pieces 🙂 —such as the featured dress in this post, or, make a two-piece dress from a very large skirt, or, a two-piece dress from two shirts, a pair of shorts, and a flared skirt. But, then, each piece of the two-piece dresses can be paired with other tops and skirts for a different look! So, in that case, you get the best of both worlds. 😀
