The Warmth of Wood … trash to treasure

Hey.

This is the second in my mini series, which could be called The Red Wall series. Lol.

As you saw in my previous post, color on the wall can really bring life to a room, especially when the furniture is in neutrals.

Considering clothing style, I’m not too fond of neutrals. But, this couch really grabbed me! …and, with the red wall, it looks dynamic!

This is QUITE a change from the way it used to look!

Thank goodness!

If you’ve been a member of my DIY Bohemian family for any length of time, you know how I love to repurpose things I find free, or cheap!

I rescued this solid wood closet door from somebody’s trash pile a while back. It has been leaning against my garage wall awaiting it’s time to shine!

found louvered closet door

As I have been re-designing my wall, I had my window cabinet on the left side of the wall. I needed something to counterbalance on the right side of the wall. A-ha! I thought of that louvered closet door!

Inverted, It fills the corner with another touch of wood and balances the window cabinet I made!

Only thing, it had a “tab” at the top which is supposed to fit into a groove or something, when used as an actual closet door.

I had just bought a little hack saw at the Dollar Tree (yes, it was a dollar!). This was perfect! I trimmed off the little appendage, so it’s no longer noticeable.

My composition doll and her friends

Now, it was time to dress it up!

A while back, when I was at the flea market, I was dying for this composition doll from, I think, the ’30s.

The dealer couldn’t go down on his price because he needed a minimum for the day for his booth rent.

But, he threw in four metal leaf pictures! I got the doll and the pictures for $30. The pictures look fabulous on the louvered door!!

I used “S” hooks to hang the pictures on the louvers.

The trend these days seems to be painted furniture…painted everything!

I like painted furniture, and really admire – and would like to emulate – some of those talented people who re-do furniture from sad rejects into fabulous pieces of art – Confessions of a Serial DIYer, for one! She’s very talented in her refinishing of furniture, and her display and photography! <3.

But, I’ve always LOVED wood!

So, even though painted pieces are very attractive – many times (sometimes, I prefer the “before” pix!), I love to appreciate the true beauty of wood grain and color, enhanced with stain and/or a soft finish.

I considered adding a little accent paint, maybe with a dry brush, on my louvers, similar to this I found on Pinterest and added to my Bohemian Decor board.

But, after I sprayed it down with the hose and let it dry, I decided I like it better natural. It went well with my window wall cabinet and the “wood” trim on my couch.

I also put up a wooden shelf over my window treatment for the glass doors.

It used to have an UGH!ly office-like vertical blind (which came with the house) that had definitely seen better days! Lol.

I told you: This room was not my favorite…”purdy” ordinary.

But, I’m changing that now!!

But, the new window treatment is for another post! 😀

Keep watching your email!!

This was SO precious!

This beautiful lynx kitten has nothing to do with this post, I just thought it was wonderful and wanted to share!! <3

I LOVE kitties of any species!!

“I think it looks lovely, Cindy! You can be very proud of your work! I am not so handy with the manly tools. 😜😀❤️❤️”

    1. Thank you Deirdre. The neat thing is, this doesn’t require much of the “manly” capabilities! It’s a simple re-purpose with a huge return, in my opinion.

My point is, that something considered worthless to one, rescued from the fate of the garbage dump by a resourceful other, can be a room changer – FREE! This cost me nothing, and added so much creative design!
